Arkitekturforskning om begreppet arkitekturfotografi
I mitt arbete som arkitekt har jag under mer än 30 år fotograferat arkitektur i form av byggnader och stadslandskap. Under min utbildning i arkitektur blev jag introducerad i fotografins underbara värld av dokumentärfilmaren Berndt Klyvare som då undervisade på Arkitekturskolan vid Kungl. Tekniska Högskolan i Stockholm. Vi fick lära oss grunderna i konsten att fotografera i teori och praktik. Jag är nu tacksam för att vi vägleddes av en filmmakare och ej av en arkitekturfotograf.

Trots detta började jag själv genom omvärldens impulser fotografera arkitektur på traditionellt vis genom användande av ett skiftobjektiv för att kunna ”kontrollera perspektivet” och ge byggnader i bilden parallella vertikala linjer. Detta förfaringssätt skulle leda till en harmonisk estetisk bild. Detta missförstånd eller manér har pågått nästan sedan fotografins födelse och i vart fall sedan arkitekturfotografins genombrott som vi kommer att få se. Skiftobjektivet kallas även objektiv för perspektivkontroll. Perspektivet kan ej ändras eller kontrolleras genom att manipulera ett kameraobjektiv eller en kamera. Perspektivet kan endast ändras eller kontrolleras genom att ögonpunkten flyttas i förhållande till objektet.

Dagens ledande professionella arkitekturfotografer använder sig fortfarande av denna obskyra teknik ofta på ett extremt sätt och ibland utan återhållsamhet. Genom att studera och ifrågasätta den väl etablerade diskursen inom denna genre hoppas jag finna ett nytt förhållningssätt till en arkitekturfotografi mer anpassad till det mänskliga seendet och människans rumsuppfattning. Därför startar jag denna forskningsblogg.

As an architect I have been photographing architecture for more than 30 years, mainly buildings and urbanscapes. During my studies in architecture I was first introduced to the wonderful world of photography by documentary filmmaker Berndt Klyvare who at that time was teaching in the School of Architecture at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. We were taught the basics in the art of photography in theory and in practice. I am now very grateful that we were led by a filmmaker instead of misled by an architectural photographer.

Regardless of this and driven by the photographic discourse at that time I went on photographing architecture the traditional way through the use of a shifting lens in order to apply “perspective control” thereby giving buildings in the image parallel vertical lines. This way of working was supposed to leave you with a pleasing aesthetic image. This misconception or manierism has been ongoing almost since the birth of photography or at least since the breakthrough of architectural photography as will be shown. The shift-lens is also called the perspective control-lens. Perspective cannot be changed or controlled by manipulating a camera lens or camera body. Perspective can only be changed or controlled by moving your viewpoint in relation to your viewed object.

The leading acclaimed architectural photographers of today are still using this obscure technique and often in the extreme and sometimes without restraint. By studying and questioning the very much established discourse in this genre I hope to find a path for a more straightforward approach to architectural photography based on the human eye and human perception of space. This is why I am posting this blog as a research tool.
